Virginia Senate Leader Changes Mind to Support Marijuana Decriminalization

Virginia Marijuana Legalization

he stated that he supports studying marijuana decriminalization. Norment is one of the most powerful political leaders in Virginia.

The announcement from Norment came just before the Norfolk City Council dinner that was held at the Slover Library, according to CT Post. Norment suggested that the Virginia State Crime Commission carries out the study. Following the results of the study, the Crime Commission would make recommendations based upon the best interest of the state and its residents.

Norment stated, “I think it’s absolutely crazy that we continue to lock people up for possession of a modest amount of marijuana,” reports the Washington Post.

Norment is adamant about his support for decriminalization. He does not, however, support marijuana legalization. If marijuana is decriminalized in Virginia, it would be treated similarly to a traffic offense.

Legislation may begin in 2018, following the results of a study to be conducted by the Crime Commission.
